As I write this, I look out the window at what must be one of the warmest summers New Zealand has had in a long time… and there is still some summer to come! I wonder how many parents in weather such as this have, as I have, used a kid’s trip to the dairy for an ice-cream as an excuse to get their hands on one…or a chocolate bar! Oh I know I’m not alone.
Over the course of the summer, I have come across so many articles, documentaries, podcasts and books explaining the effects of excess sugar. Being active and outdoors, not even this knowledge I was gaining was enough to curb my appetite for this addictive substance. This is not a loose comment either, PET scans show that sugar is as addictive as cocaine and heroin!
As moreish as sugary products are there is always that moment when enough is enough! Something inside you triggers and the time arrives for action, unfortunately knowing what would be effective and sustainable action is unknown. If like me you have a love / hate relationship with sugar, and you’re at a point where you want to end it - I have great news. This is the first in a series of posts that together form a process that, if followed, will guide you to a lifestyle free of the strong grasp that refined sugar seems to have on us.
What would be useful is if you would comment below with what reasons, excuses or beliefs you know of – possibly your own or that of someone else – as to why living sugar free is virtually impossible in today’s age. When 80% of the 600,000 food products available on supermarket shelves contain sugar (an actual statistic), this isn’t an uncommon belief.
The series will cover steps to follow, education on food selection and coaching tools for state change and pattern interruption to give you the best chance of success – after all 2018 is a new year and a new and improved you! So stay tuned people, you’re about to change your life!
